Warriors: Steve Kerr says win over Mavs felt like throwback Run TMC game

With a rash of injuries, the Warriors were down to zero centers and two power forwards in their game against the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday. Draymond Green played 29 minutes at center, making for a fast-paced game in which the Warriors put up a season high in points, blowing out the Mavericks 147-116.

“I think I only called plays in timeouts,” head coach Steve Kerr said after the game. “The pace of the game, we were just going. I felt like Nellie, it was like the Run TMC days all over again.”

Kerr was referencing former Warriors head coach Don Nelson and the fast-paced, small-ball teams he ran with Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin in the late 1980s and 1990s.

The Warriors were without centers James Wiseman, Kevon Looney, Marquese Chriss and Alen Smailagic, who are all out with injuries. They were also without Eric Paschall, who plays small-ball center in the second unit. Green was their only option, but his size and IQ allowed the Warriors to go all-in with small-ball with the team undermanned. It paid off.

Green at center had one of his best games this year, totaling 15 assists with 11 points and six rebounds. The spacing also did wonders for Kelly Oubre Jr., who was used a bit more as a catch-and-shoot option and put up a career-high 40 points with seven three pointers.

Oubre has had a rocky Warriors debut, and Steph Curry could only praise him for how he’s maintained his competitive edge.

“A lot of respect for a guy like that, with how the season has gone so far,” Curry said after the game.
