Warriors’ Steph Curry named All-Star game starter

In another example of Steph Curry doing Steph Curry things again, the red-hot Warriors star was named to the NBA All-Star team for the seventh time on Thursday.

Curry will be one of the starting guards at the All-Star Game in Atlanta on March 7. As of the last revealed vote count a week ago, Curry was the top vote-getter among all guards in the league. Final vote totals have not yet been released.

However, he fell short of becoming the conference’s captain as LeBron James earned that honor for the West and Brooklyn’s Kevin Durant for the East. James and Durant will pick their rosters, which begs the question of whether Durant will choose his former Warriors teammate Curry during the televised draft if given the chance?

Curry has never played better than he has this season, according to Warriors coach Steve Kerr. The 32-year-old Curry has joined Michael Jordan as the only players in NBA history at least 32 years old to average 30.0 points through 29 regular season games. His 30.0 points per game is the second-best scoring average in the league, trailing just Bradley Beal of Washington (32.8).

Curry and James will be joined in the Western Conference’s starting lineup by Nuggets center Nikola Jokic, Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard and Mavericks guard Luka Doncic, who outlasted Oakland native Damian Lillard of the Blazers for the second guard spot.

Warriors guard Klay Thompson, whose torn Achilles tendon suffered before the season sidelined him for the year, sat eighth among West guards a week ago. Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins was seventh in the voting among West frontcourt players in that count.

In the East, Durant is a starter, as are Nets teammate Kyrie Irving, Wizards guard Bradley Beal, 76ers center Joel Embiid and Bucks forward and reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Bucks.

The rest of the rosters will be determined by a combination of votes from the fans (50 percent), media (25 percent) and coaches (25 percent), and will be announced later.

The NBA announced Thursday it will again implement the Elam ending to decide the winning team, with a final target score set during a fourth quarter that won’t feature a game clock.
