Selling something online? Beware of Google Voice scam

There is a scam that started to circulate last year and if you’re selling anything online, you need to be aware of it. It’s being called the Google Voice scam.Sister station WGAL received an email from a viewer:”Today we posted a grill to be sold on Facebook Marketplace and a person contacted my wife and asked if she can come to see it and we said yes. She wanted our address and phone number. She said she was sending a text with a verification code and put it in an e-mail. The person never answered back. Do you know what we can expect?”Here’s the scam: If you give them the verification code, they’ll try to use it to create a Google Voice number linked to your phone number. Google Voice would create a different phone number that scammers could use to make calls or send text messages from a web browser or a mobile device to rip people off.You would not know about this, but the scam number could be traced back to you.The viewer in this case did respond with the code. To protect yourself, do not respond to anyone asking you to send a verification code to confirm your identity.Watch the video above for the full story.
