Monterey Bay F.C. match ends in draw as team makes playoff push

Monterey Bay F.C. hosted Phoenix Rising FC Wednesday night at Cardinale Stadium as the Union make a push for the playoffs.Monterey Bay’s Christian Volesky scored the opening goal in the ninth minute.Phoenix answered right back, scoring on a penalty kick in minute 15’ tying the game up 1-1.MBFC wasted no time with their offensive attack as Grant Robinson scores in minute 20’ giving the Union back the lead. It was a special moment for Robinson who scored his first professional goal, MBFC said.However, Phoenix kept things close as they capitalized on their second penalty kick in minute 40’ tying the match 2-2.Monterey Bay came storming back right before the end of the half as Christian Volesky scored his second goal of the night to put MBFC up 3-2.Opening the second half Phoenix goes in for a goal in minute 76’ to tie the game up again 3-3MBFC lost their top scorer of the match in minute 82. Volesky had to exit the game with an apparent leg injury.Monterey Bay had one last chance in stoppage time with a penalty kick opportunity by Seku Conneh. He missed the kick.The match ended in a 3-3 draw.Monterey Bay F.C. missed an opportunity to move into seventh place in the USL Championship western division standings. The Union remain in playoff contention despite the draw. Monterey Bay’s next match is Saturday, Sept. 24, at Miami FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
