Man found dead in Yolo County trash site identified

A garbage crew made a gruesome discovery early Tuesday at a Yolo County waste disposal site — one of their loads collected from Dixon included a dead body.

Police say the death was accidental and the Yolo County Coroner’s Office shared that sentiment.

The victim, identified Wednesday as 28-year-old Miguel Peñuelas Fonseca of Dixon, died as a result of compressive asphyxia, advised Chief Deputy Coroner Gina Moya. “It was an accident,” she affirmed.

Events unfolded around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.

According to Dixon police, an investigation revealed that Peñuelas, for some reason, had climbed into the Dumpster outside a local business and covered himself with cardboard.

He was still in the receptacle around 5:30 a.m., when a waste disposal service made a pickup, emptying the contents of the Dumpster into a garbage truck, police said.

The vehicle then continued along its route to a dump site just outside of Davis. Upon releasing the truck’s contents at the site, the victim’s body was discovered. Davis police responded and Dixon police were subsequently called in.

The matter remains under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call Dixon Police Detective Sgt. Jenna Cameron at 678-7070.

A GoFundMe account has been set up by the family.

Translated from Spanish, the post reads: “With our shattered heart, we share the terrible news of our brother Miguel Peñuelas. Today, Tuesday, June 28, we received the worst news that they found my brother dead.

“This gofund (sic) is being held to raise funds for the funeral expenses of our dear brother/friend.”
