The 49ers begin their injury redemption tour with a Week 1 date against the Detroit Lions.
Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Bosa, Deebo Samuel, Raheem Mostert and George Kittle all missed significant time in the 2020 season with injuries. They are all back for the 2021 season and ready to go in pursuit of a Super Bowl.
Joining them will be rookie quarterback Trey Lance, who is expected to take over for Garoppolo as the starter at some point this season and possibly see some playing time as a change-of-pace option. If he’s fully recovered from a finger injury suffered in San Francisco’s final preseason game, his first regular-season NFL snaps could come in Sunday’s game (10 a.m., Fox).
The Lions look significantly different from last year, as they kick-started yet another rebuild by trading former No. 1 overall pick Matthew Stafford to the Rams in exchange for former No. 1 overall pick and Marin Catholic/Cal alum Jared Goff. Detroit also received three draft picks from the Niners’ division rivals in the deal, as Goff’s star has fallen somewhat since taking the Rams to the Super Bowl in 2018.
Follow along with our reporters Cam Inman and Jerry McDonald, columnist Dieter Kurtenbach and other analysts providing their thoughts about the Niners’ opener.
