Former Salinas High cross-country distance ace Kayla Clayton placed second overall at the NAIA Mid-State Classic, helping the Southern Oregon women’s team to a championship.
The senior standout covered the 5k course in 18:35.00, running 42 seconds faster than her winning time at the CCC Preview Meet on Sept. 9.
Clayton has produced three top five finishes this season for Southern Oregon, who competes today in the Cascade Conference finals.
Last spring Clayton placed 18th in the 10,000-meter run at the NAIA Outdoor track and field championships, posting the third fastest time in school history in 36:58.16.
A Division I state meet qualifier in cross-country as a senior at Salinas in 2016, Clayton was the Salinas City Meet champion.
