REPORTER: ONBOARD THIS UNMANNED LAUNCH IN FEBRUARY TO RESUPPLY THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION ARE A NUMBER OF EXPERIMENTS, INCLUDING SOME GRAPE JUICE FROM MICHAEL DAVID WINERY IN LODI >> THE OWNER SAT NEXT TO A GENTLEMAN WHO INFORMED HIM ON AN AIRPLANE THAT THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION WAS TAKING PROJECTS FROM THE PRIVATE SECTOR. THE OWNER CAME TO THE WINEMAKING TEAM AND ASKED US TO COME UP WITH A PROJECT. REPORTER: THE LOCAL TEAM HAD ONLY A FEW DAYS TO SUBMIT THEIR IDEA. >> AND IT WAS A PROJECT I HAD FROM GRADUATE SCHOOL AND IT WAS MORE OF A CONTINUATION OF LOOKING AT THE MICROBIAL LOADS AND HOW THEY COMPARE IN A FERMENTATION ON EARTH COMPARED TO BEING UP IN SPACE. REPORTER: SPACE STATION SCIENTISTS CAME BY TO CHECK OUT THE PROPOSAL JEFF: AFTER WE WENT OVER THE DETAILS WITH THEM THEY LIKED IT A LOT BECAUSE THEY ARE GROWING FOOD UP ON THE SPACE STATION SO THIS FIT INTO HAVING PERISHABLE FOODS UP IN SPACE AND THIS FITS INTO THE WHOLE PLAN OF HAVING FRESH FOODS UP IN SPACE. MOST OF THE KIND OF FOOD ARE PACKAGED. REPORTER: THERE IS A LOT MORE SCIENCE INVOLVED OTHER THAN JUST FERMENTATION IN ZERO GRAVITY, AND WINE TASTERS AT THE WINERY WERE CURIOUS WHILE SIPPING WHAT’S DRINKABLE DOWN HERE, NOW NANCY: I THINK ITS VERY EXCITING AND IT’S A WONDERFUL ADVENTURE ESPECIALLY COMING FROM LODI, CALIFORNIA. Some winemakers in California are curious.Grape juice from Michael David Winery in Lodi, California, was on board an unmanned supply launch in February going to the International Space Station.The owner of winery learned that it was taking potential projects from the private sector and submitted an idea within days.”It was a project I had from graduate school,” Jeff Farthing, of Michael David Winery, told sister station KCRA. “And it was more of a continuation of looking at the microbial loads, and how they compare in a fermentation of Earth compared to being up in space.”Winemakers are told to expect the unexpected when the grape juice returns from its out-of-this-world adventure.Watch the video above to learn more about this story.
