Recent Carmel High graduate and four-sport standout Elle Bohlman was one of four girls in the nation to be awarded the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Girls in Football Scholarship.
The Herald’s Female Athlete of the Year last season, Bohlman led the Padres in points as a kicker last fall, and also caught two passes as a receiver.
The University of Notre Dame-bound student was Carmel’s kicker for three years, knocking down three field goals.
The Buccaneers have been awarding four scholarships to girls that play high school football for the past three years.
Bohlman also was the Player of the Year in the Cypress Division in basketball and earned all-league honors in the Gabilan Division for golf and lacrosse.
At Division I schools
Four players, who honed their skills at Hartnell College, are playing football for Division I programs this fall on scholarship.
Headlining the list is offensive tackle Santo DeFranco, who will start his third season for Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.
DeFranco, who began his career redshirting at an NAIA school out of Palma High, returned to Hartnell, where he earned all-conference honors in 2019.
The 6-foot-4, 275-pounder and former all-county standout will lineup against Auburn in Week 2 for Mercer.
Davon Ferguson is listed as a preseason honorable mention All-American coming into the fall as a defensive back for Bowling Green.
Ferguson, who earned all-state honors in his one season at Hartnell, transferred from Kansas to Bowling Green last year. He led the Mid-American Conference in solo tackles at 5.6 a game, finishing 14th in the nation.
The 5-foot-10, 190-pounder was named to the 2022 Athlon Sports preseason All-MAC first team, and is projected to be drafted in the 2023 NFL draft.
Kicker Abraham Montano made an impression last year for Fresno State when called upon in four games, going 5-of-5 in field goal attempts, and 14-of-14 in extra points.
The former Panther and Alisal kicker also averaged 58.8 yards on kickoffs. In 2019, he didn’t miss an extra point in 33 attempts for Hartnell, and kicked a career-long 50-yard field goal.
Josiah Freeman is also at Fresno State after earning all-state honors last fall at Hartnell, leading the state in receiving yards per game at 100.8.
The 6-foot-4 Freeman is the first Soledad High football player to earn a Division I football scholarship.
Monterey Bay F.C.
The struggles of an expansion team in its inaugural season were expected. Starting the season with seven consecutive road matches didn’t help.
But the Monterey Bay Football Club Union are playing some of their best soccer in the United Soccer League, having gone 7-1-1 in their last eight games after a 2-11-1 start.
Monterey Bay F.C. went unbeaten in July. At one point, a defense anchored by Kai Greene did not allow a goal for 588 minutes.
Goalie Antony Siaha posted three shutouts in his first four starts. Morey Doner, the only player to play in all 22 matches for the Union, shares the team lead in assists with Robbie Crawford with four.
Chase Boone has produced a team-high six goals, while former CSU Monterey Bay midfielder Adrian Rebollar has four goals, including a game-winner eight days ago against El Paso.
Defender Hugh Roberts, who has three goals and one assist, has been the Union’s captain for 17 of their first 22 matches.
