Central Coast businesses prepare for end of state’s indoor mask mandate

California’s indoor mask mandate is expiring on Wednesday, which comes as the state continues to see encouraging signs containing the COVID-19 virus. All Central Coast counties are following the state’s lead but businesses can still require masks if they choose to. Gallery owner Chris Windfield said he’s conflicted on what to do but decided to keep his “mask required” sign up. “I’m kind of mixed. I still think it’s running around like crazy all this virus stuff,” said Windfield. Others are just relieved to not have to enforce masks anymore. Retail manager Mark Huber said, “It removes conflict from us now so we don’t have to enforce it and based on customers’ opinions, we can just let them come in on their own now.”While hairstylist Amanda Weitzel said she’s letting her clients call the shots. She said, “We’ve always been just really careful and whatever our clients are comfortable with is what we go for. I always ask them what they feel most comfortable with and we just go from there.” Different businesses will now have different rules when it comes to masks. Like at Carmel Barre fitness studio where only the unvaccinated will have to mask up. “Our clientele is really open to finally shedding the mask. Many of them. So as long as the vaccination we’ve got record of, masks will not be required walking into the studio on the mat,” said Carmel Barre owner Arianne Bautista. Some businesses are still in limbo and plan to revisit the mask mandate conversation on Wednesday. Alvarado Brewery manager Nicole Grumnons said, “We kind of need to decide if we’re going to stick with it, having all the staff wear a mask or if the vaccinated staff get comfortable and we feel comfortable having them unmasked. Throughout COVID, it’s kind of just rolling with the punches so this is the latest one.”
