Beloved grocery store employee with Down syndrome retires after working 27 years

A grocery store employee who is beloved by customers and co-workers alike has retired after nearly three decades with the Massachusetts-based supermarket chain Market Basket. Philip Donahue, who has Down syndrome, got his first Market Basket job at age 16 bagging groceries and worked his way up to customer service representative.Throughout his 27 years with the company, Donahue always loved to greet customers and help them out with whatever they needed.A Market Basket spokesperson called Donahue “a beloved presence.””Thank you Philip for serving our customers in the Lowell and Tewksbury communities for 27 years! We wish you a very happy retirement,” Market Basket wrote on Facebook.Donahue is a member of the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress’ Self Advocate Advisory Council and sits on the board of Lowell’s Recreational Adult Resource Association.He also runs track in the Special Olympics and holds a brown belt in karate.
